What goes into Achoura fakya
Every family has its own list, but the same classics almost always appear. Walnuts first, our Walnut halves (kerkaa). Almonds, to choose from Standard almonds, Forna almonds from Meknes and Roasted almonds. Dates, from Tunisian dates on the branch to Large Medjool dates. Dried figs (chriha), with Spanish dried figs or Unsweetened Turkish dried figs. Raisins (zbib), Unsweetened golden raisins or Unsweetened jumbo raisins. And for the children, peanuts (kawkaw) and chickpeas: our Caramel peanuts and our Olive and oregano chickpeas are the treat versions. Nothing stops you from adding cashews or pistachios.
How much to plan
There's no official quantity: people buy according to the size of the family and the number of visits expected. As a rough guide, a 2 kg Achoura basket could be made up like this: 500 g of walnuts, 500 g of almonds, 300 g of dates, 250 g of figs, 250 g of raisins and 200 g of peanuts and chickpeas. Adjust to your taste: more dates for the grandparents, more peanuts for the children. Our guide “The Achoura fakya list” details each ingredient.
A celebration that puts children first
In Morocco, Achoura honors children: gifts, sweets, toys, then the water games of Zemzem day. Fakya is part of the celebration. Little bags of peanuts, raisins and dates get slipped into pockets, and the older ones help set up the platter. Preparing these bags ahead, one per child, is a lovely way to share the celebration with neighbors and family.
Ordering in time
Achoura week is a busy time for fakya: order a few days ahead, especially for large quantities or a prepared basket. You can send us your list on WhatsApp, down to the kilo: we'll confirm availability and the total, then the delivery time. Payment is on delivery or by bank transfer.
Presenting and storing
For guests, set out a large platter where each family of fakya has its place. What's left keeps in airtight jars, somewhere cool and away from light; walnuts, more fragile, are better off in the refrigerator once the June heat sets in, and so are soft dates.
